Baseball

Everyone should have a list of what they want and what they have. It’s basic card collecting 101. Everyone’s list will be different, but that’s ok, if we all collected the same thing it would be boring. For me it’s O-Pee-Chee branded products. From early stand-alones, to Topps Canadian cousin, to brief independence in the 1990’s to Upper Deck license I want them all. I’ve had a love hate relationship with sports other than hockey and soccer, so it took me a while to decide what to do with my baseball piles. But once I decided O-Pee-Chee and O-Pee-Chee alone it all came clear. I’m not sure why I hesitated, it was always meant to be for me.

According to the my notes and help from various databases (including COMC.COM and tradingcarddb.com) my dream list of completing 1 of every O-Pee-Chee branded cards would comprise a total of 20,586 unique items.

With a few caveats:

  1. 1 card = 1 item
  2. Some O-Pee-Chee cards have 2 stickers per card. This would count as 2 items.
  3. Sticker Albums from O-P-Chee count as 1 item.
  4. Inserts are listed as 1 item
  5. Box bottoms totally count.

And here is card #2,349 which puts me at 11.41% of all O-Pee-Chee Baseball cards. A long way to go.

To visualize the journey I ended up with a chart like list, and a list like this -> O-Pee-Chee Baseball Want List

Any help with listing sets/inserts not shown below, or any O-Pee-Chee Doubles you want to trade, please let me know.

In 2009 Upper Deck brought back the O-Pee-Chee brand for one year. For me it’s a set I have to add to my want list because it carries my beloved brand. But more than that, the card design is actually quite nice. There is a nice mix of posed studio shots and game shots.

img_2089 img_2090 img_2091

Some top notch pitchers in Greinke, Verlander and good Canadian boy Bedard.

In total 44 cards came this way from Highly Subjective and Completely Arbitrary which is a nice way to start a set!

Loyalty is a dying art these days. I’ve been loyal to the O-Pee-Chee brand since I started collecting. I remember visiting with my cousins who lived near the border and they would sometimes have Topps cards mixed into their piles and I’d pull them all out before any trading was done.

It took me a few years to realize that O-Pee-Chee had the license to Topps products in Canada and the cards where very similar (with the exception that O-Pee-Chee came out later in the season so there would be some cards updated or noted “now with..”)

O-Pee-Chee flew solo in the 90’s for a couple years and had unique product (Premier for one), before being relegated to being a Topps Insert/Parallel only and then disappearing altogether for a few seasons.

Happily (for me) Upper Deck took over the licensing of the name. In Hockey that meant stand alone products bearing the famous O-Pee-Chee logo to collect and gave me a reason to pick up newer issues. On the baseball side, it’s been mostly forgotten and unloved in the past 23 years. Nothing from 1994-2008 (that I have been made aware of) carried the magic words O-Pee-Chee.

Until 2008 when this neat 50 card insert was included. In 2009 their was a full run, but these were the first new ones to carry on the lineage.

Thanks to Brian at Highly Subjective And Completely Arbitrary I know have my first new O-Pee-Chee cards to come out since 1994.

My goal of collecting one of every O-Pee-Chee card is now 1 card closer.

Box 2 in the pile of mysteries was a slight improvement over the first box. It was however all Baseball, and unless there was some oddballs I wanted or some O-Pee-Chee the best I could hope for is some more trade fodder.

It started out with a massive pile of 1991 Upper Deck. Over 1600 cards going straight into the dead pile (minus a couple of Chipper Jones RC’s)

If there is someone out there collecting 1991 Upper Deck and still missing a card I’d love to send you a few 🙂

I’m not a super baseball collector so I’m not sure what is collectible or hot, but these were the interesting ones that made the cut to the Trade pile.

Some Panini, Topps Attax and Leaf Babe Ruth…

And about 20 Topps Heritage.

If you want to see a copy of the complete trade list I have in excel form, just ask. 🙂

When you pick up random boxes from people you never know what you are going to find. Of course there will be lots of Upper Deck and Donruss, but the weird and wonderful stuff is the most fun.

Like these. 1987 Detroit Tigers Coca-Cola Fold Out Things

I picked up 2 in the most recent box including  one that is unfolded and one that appears still sealed.

Book 1 Includes Kirk Gibson, Larry Herdon and Walt Terrerll

Book 2 is Jack Morris, Mike Heath and Dave Bergman.

Cool Oddballs.

In 1991 Post Cereal released a set of 30 MLBPA licensed cards. As they were not licensed by MLB they do not show the logos, however somewhat surprisingly they do show the full team names.

A set was issued for both the Canadian & American market with some differences.

The checklists are completely different. The Canadian checklist featuring 6 players from the Canadian teams (3 Blue Jays, 3 Expos), and the American version giving no love North of The Border and assuming there are no fans of those teams in the USA.

Canada gets Delino Deshields, Tim Wallach, Andres Galaragga, Kelly Gruber, Dave Steib, John Olerud which makes total sense. We also get for some reason Dave Magadan, Andre Dawson (likely do to the Expos connection), Eddie Murray , Benito Santiago, Glenn Davis, Robin Yount, Bobby Thigpen, Dave Winfield & Ozzie Smith exclusively in the Northern version.

In the USA instead you get Mark McGwire, Jose Cancesco, Vince Coleman, Darryl Strawberry, Greg Jefferies, Tony Gwynn, Ken Griffey Jr, Bobby Bonilla, Gary Sheffield, Ryne Sandberg, Barry Larkin, Jim Abbot, Mark Grace, Kevin Mitchell, Todd Zeile, Don Mattingly

Leaving Dave Justice, Will Clark , Sandy Alomar Jr., Lenny Dykstra, Roger Clemens, Chris Sabo, Nolan Ryan, Cal Ripken Jr., Barry Bonds, Cecil Fielder, George Brett, Rickey Henderson, Kirby Puckett, & Kevin Maas  to do double duty.

If anyone is looking to add some of these I have doubles to trade of Fielder, Clemons, Santiago and Murray

Every once in a while I get some baseball, football, basketball and other stuff in with my purchases. Although I don’t normally buy lots unless they have some OPC hockey I need, in this scenario I picked up a couple of vintage OPC baseball.

As far as I know they are the same as the Topps version but have the “printed in Canada” notification to set them apart.

Here they are in all their glory.
